@Ronaldombachi in uganda many farmers dont much consider feed processing thats why recently there was prominent animal death in districts of nakasongola where farmers still used normadic pastoralism which does not at all otherwise almost all we use there farming comes from Kenya..

Write your reply...in tanzania it is more than funny...like other east african countries there are initiatives that had been put in place to assist extension services dissemination by the government at the district and ward level...However practically this service is not helping small holder farmers as the government is not supplying fuel regularly. ..no maintainance done to these facilities to prodive immediate service. ..as a coooying mechanism,the extension officers havr indirectly owned them fir their use, they use this service ti access their oen farm projects, use them onky when they are given assignments from the top and not when they are requested by the farmers. In Tanzania the only mechanism that is now working on this case is that of grouping farmers in associations..where particular farmers are grouped deoending on their interest in a given crop thus supported with extension services from the farm up to the market.it has brought significant changes in the sector to some extent in Tanzania ...this move has been supported by world vision tanzania. ..Nyakitonto youth for development NGO

I wish my voice of association could be heard all over farmers many dont even seek information upon the recent grid of pests and diseases outbreak which make them vulnerable to spread but we as farmers shouldn't look on today im here designing pigsty for my neigbour

I've gone through this issue of agricultural extension officers, it is great to our colleagues who started the debate. It's true that the extension officers are employed by different governments are given areas of jurisdiction, the only problem is that the amount of work they are supposed to do is extreme. The Agriculture sector is of need as or more than other departments. We have just one officer attending to more than 10 thousand farmers planting different and coming from different educational, cultural, social, and more than this the climate difference.
I propose that more work is to be done by our dear Governments, NGOs, INGOS, individuals and private registered Agricultural bodies to work and invest heavily.
Hunger should be a gone case in normal climatic weather.
Let's help to do what the world governments can't do volunteering, part time, full time, vocational practises to fill in gaps.

I could not agree with you more. I have never seen an extension officer even after requesting numerous times within my county.....We need to have better access to resources and experts, the current system is broken.

I know there are some SMS services out there but it is so hard to get quality information through such short messages. As access to digital information evolves extension services should to...but, unfortunately, it's falling behind.....

Sorry it's better when you come up with the critical thing it's better also to suggest the solution

How do you think we should take the first steps?

Extension service provision seems to be demand driven currently. The only way to get this services is to demand for them. Yesteryears the services were being brought to the farmers do steps as away of encouraging more people to take to farming. As it is now farmers are more enlightened and such extension services are getting privatized.cooperative extension approach is the only way to go.

We have a problem with agricultural extension service providers. Government is recruiting these personnel throughout, but our farms are producing less and less food every time. If the impact of these personnel is not felt then we don't require them. For instance one acre of land under good management practices is suppose to produce 7 - 10 bags of beans but most farmers are producing 3 - 4 bags why? They know nothing about good land preparation, certified seeds, appropriate spacing etc. Most farmers in my area are planting beans approx 1m x 60cm will you expect them to harvest 7 -10 bags per acre in this scenario? If agricultural extension officer were really doing their job this issue have been sorted long ago and fill our stores with food.
